Supporting male caregivers

A fantastic inclusive initiative for male caregivers...

A new playgroup for dads is helping break down barriers for parents tackling fatherhood in the coastal regional city of Warrnambool.

It all started with Sona Tuakalau, who moved to Warrnambool from Christchurch, New Zealand, and quickly noticed there were no dedicated spaces for dads and their kids to interact like he was used to.

So he set about changing it. He held a trial group and it proved to be an instant hit.

Now an inclusive group for all male caregivers is a permanent fixture in the community.

Every week, dads and their kids come to learn, play and socialise with other children and parents in a safe and nurturing environment.

"We had a lot of dads turning up and wondering if there was a space for them to come and be social with other dads and their children," Mr Tuakalau said.

"I think it's really important in any community to have a lot of different options for different people to come and be a part of something.

"To come where there's an opportunity to do that in a welcoming space that they feel a part of is nice."

Many of the male caregivers who still have to work take an hour or two off in the morning to come to the playgroup.

"Dads get to come and play with their child and experience them growing up too."
